The name "Vital Shield" is apt, because this plan's primary mission is to give you coverage in the event of a catastrophic medical emergency. But the plan also offers some other basic benefits and a deductible ($2,900) that's lower than some of the other high-deductibles you'll see on the market. But beware of the co-payment maximum, which is a sky high $5,900.
Vital Shield 2900 also offers $10 copays for generic drugs and two pre-deductible calendar-year office visits for preventive care. Vital Shield is one of Blue Shield's lowest priced PPO plans.
BEST FOR: Someone healthy that wants insurance to serve as a "vital shield" against a medical emergency.
PROS: Very cheap premiums and an excellent network in
California
. Blue Shield has one of the largest PPO networks in the
Golden
State
.
CONS: High, high, high coinsurance. After you burn through your deductible, you still pay 40% of covered expenses, until you've spent the coinsurance maximum of $5,900. Maternity isn't covered and there is no brand-name prescription drug benefit.
