A plan with relatively low premiums and a relatively low deductible, Preventative and Hospital Care 1250 is, unlike the similar Preventative and Hospital Care 3000, not compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).
The plan also has a high out-of-pocket maximum, so in an emergency you would pay thousands before the plan covered 100 percent of your expenses. There are also no pre-deductible co-pays for office visits to your doctor and no co-pays for prescription drugs. Some other high-deductible health plans at least let you make a routine visit to your doctor for a small co-pay prior to burning through your deductible. This one does not (although it does have some pre-deductible preventive health benefits). It also makes you pay 20% of post-deductible expenses until you hit your OOPM.
PROS: It’s a simple plan to understand. Also, the Aetna name means you don’t have to worry about being covered in the event of a major medical emergency.
CONS: High out-of-pocket expenses. You won’t enjoy any benefits from the plan until you have burned through the deductible or full benefits until you’ve burned through the out-of-pocket maximum (OOPM).
BEST FOR: Someone looking for a moderate deductible for a low, low premium price, and are willing to put up with a high OOPM.
